First benchwarmer, then matchwinner – youngster Broos is in line for a starting place

striker Fynn Broos made his seasonal debut in the Wattenscheid starting lineup at the weekend and immediately became the matchwinner. Will he also start against Gievenbeck?

SG Wattenscheid 09 are back on track after a month of struggles. In the 2-1 win against Westfalia Rhynern, one player in particular caught the eye: striker Fynn Broos was named in the starting lineup for the first time this season and immediately became the match winner with a goal and an assist.

The 21-year-old invigorated the Wattenscheid offensive game and posed a real threat even aside from his goal contribution. “Of course it was nice to finally be able to start after waiting and being patient for so long. Even though I was sitting on the bench week after week, I always gave it my all in training. To then make such a successful debut in the starting lineup is an incredible feeling,” he said about his performance.

Broos moved from SV Wanne 11 to the Lohrheide in 2023 after attracting attention in the Landesliga with an impressive goal rate. Since then, the Herne native has been considered a reliable joker for the Wattenscheid team, but was not always satisfied with his playing time recently. As soon as he gets the long-awaited chance, he delivers arguments for more.

“It’s a sign that I can be brought on more often. I know I can score goals and help the team with my strengths. The coach put his trust in me and I repaid him,” said the attacker confidently.

For the convincing performance last weekend, Broos received special praise from head coach Christopher Pache: “Hardly any playing time, thrown in at the deep end – in my eyes, he did it brutally and was incredibly present. The way he peppered the second one in with his weak foot from a tight angle and worked the ball against the team as the sole point deserves the utmost respect.”

The football coach has three options for the position of clear center forward: Robert Nnaji, David Loheider and Broos. It’s not an easy task to ensure an even balance of playing minutes: “Fynn is just as entitled to play as everyone else. We know that he has a lot of positive things about him, but he also still has a lot to learn in many areas. That’s why we have the depth in the squad. He has proven to me one hundred percent that he has what it takes.”

One thing is certain: with two goals, Broos has provided a good argument for a place in the starting eleven next Thursday. The SG then hosts the next top team, fourth-placed 1. FC Gievenbeck (8 p.m.), with Wattenscheid 09. Now it’s up to coach Pache to decide whether to trust his youngster again.
