Third division team Rot-Weiss Essen defeated MSV Duisburg 4:1. RWE had the strong Jakob Golz to thank twice.
Rot-Weiss Essen are derby winners. In the 4:1 home win against MSV Duisburg, several players earned the title of match winner: Lucas Brumme played strongly and scored twice, Torben Müsel pulled the strings in midfield and was very confident on the ball, Vinko Sapina scored an absolute dream goal, but Jakob Golz also had good arguments on his side.
In the second half, Golz made two strong saves against Duisburg attacker Daniel Ginczek. Essen’s regular goalkeeper had little to do for a long time, but when he was called upon, he was there to hold on to the win.
“I had nothing to do for a long time in the first half and then the first shot was straight in. Of course that doesn’t feel good. So I was all the more pleased that I was able to help the team in the second half. As a goalkeeper, the question always arises: do you want games like Dresden, where it feels like you have 30 actions, or rather a game like against Duisburg, where there’s less to do? It certainly feels very, very good today,” said the RWE goalkeeper during the interview in the catacombs afterwards.
The sixth-placed team in the table had the game under control against the Zebras in the first half, but were rarely compelling. In the second half, the chances were converted with ice-cold precision. Golz had a similar view: “We took our chances in the second half and deserved to win. We have 50 points and now we’ll see what happens next.”
It was Rot-Weiss Essen’s first derby win at Hafenstrasse since 2005, when they won 1-0 at home in the 2nd division, but have since suffered three defeats (including two in the Lower Rhine Cup) and a draw in the pre-season. Golz was particularly pleased that the team was able to give the fans this victory in the prestigious duel:
Derby wins are always great. The win in Duisburg was also highly dramatic, but now here at home it’s something else again. It’s simply fun to celebrate victories at Hafenstrasse. What our fans always deliver here is really amazing.

Golz nevertheless felt a little sorry for the opponents, who suffered a bitter setback in their fight against relegation as a result of this defeat. MSV now almost need a miracle: “If the derbies no longer take place, then something will be missing. This is not a club that belongs in the regional league. “
