Rot-Weiss Essen continue to surf through the 3rd division on a wave of success. The fifth win in a row against Waldhof Mannheim.
Two series met on Sunday in the 3rd division at the stadium on Hafenstraße. Rot-Weiss Essen faced Waldhof Mannheim with the confidence of four wins in a row.
The visitors had not won any of their last six games. Both series remain unchanged after the match. The 2-0 (0-0) win for RWE was Essen’s fifth in a row, while coach Christoph Dabrowski’s side remain in third place. Mannheim are now without a win in seven matches.
And RWE wanted to show in front of 16,457 spectators just how broad their chest is after four successive trebles. But Mannheim hardly allowed Essen to create any major chances in the first 45 minutes.
The hosts were visually superior and had the best opportunities through Isaiah Young and Vinko Sapina, but the final pass or determination was lacking in the first half, which lasted a full eight minutes of stoppage time.
Because Mannheim, who missed a good opportunity shortly before the half-time whistle, had to make two injury-related changes before going into the dressing room
After the break, what both teams showed in offense was still manageable. There were attempts, but rarely more. Until the 62nd minute, when Marvin Obuz was fouled in the penalty area, Essen were awarded the penalty and missed. Obuz took the kick himself – but his attempt was extremely weak.
Nevertheless, it was a wake-up call for RWE – and five minutes later, the goal finally rang in the Mannheim box. After a long cross, it was Cedric Harenbrock at the second post who made it 1:0 with a superb volley
After another five minutes, the game was decided. Obuz with the beautiful one-two with Harenbrock – and this time he did better than from eleven meters and scored into the short corner to make it 2:0. The visitors did not recover from this double blow, as they were dangerous in front of goal from time to time, but without really finishing. RWE continue their campaign after the international break on Saturday (November 25, 2 p.m.) at FC Ingolstadt. Mannheim play at home against SC Verl on Friday (November 24, 7 p.m.)
