Alemannia Aachen have announced their first new signing for the 3rd division. As expected, he comes from the Regionalliga West.
More than a week after their early promotion to the 3rd division, Alemannia Aachen have announced their first new signing for the coming season. The Regionalliga champions did not come as a big surprise with this personnel decision: As RS already reported on Sunday, it is Charlison Benschop. The 34-year-old is moving from Wuppertaler SV to the imperial city. Aachen beat Viktoria Köln, among others, in the bidding for the experienced striker.
“In Charlie, we are gaining an experienced striker who has repeatedly shown a knack for scoring goals over the years,” explained managing director and sports director Sascha Eller. “He is a straightforward wall player who is very present on the pitch and can bring calm to the game. Charlie will not only be good for the team as a player, but also as a personality.”
Benschop has already shown his qualities at the highest level. He played for Fortuna Düsseldorf in the Bundesliga, the Dutch Eredivisie and French Ligue 1, and the ten-time Curacao international also appeared in the Europa League.
Last summer, he moved to Wuppertal in order to be closer to his family in Krefeld and to move up to the 3rd division with WSV. This plan failed – but Benschop fulfilled his duty with 13 goals and nine assists in 29 appearances. He was also on target against his future employers, scoring a goal in Wuppertal’s 4:3 defeat against Alemannia
“Having only played against Alemannia so far, I’m now looking forward to playing here myself in the new season. Together with the team, I want to win as many games as possible and be an important character for the team,” he says about his move. The talks with those responsible have shown “that this is the right step for me now”.
Of course, Benschop will not be the last new arrival at the Tivoli. Another is apparently Soufiane El-Faouzi from the Fortuna Düsseldorf regional league team. There has been no confirmation so far. However, according to the Aachener Zeitung, the 21-year-old midfielder has already announced his impending move on a platform for house-hunting.
