Dickson Abiama is now a Rot-Weiss Essen player. RWE beat TSV 1860 Munich to his signature. Abiama previously played for RWE under Patrick Glöckner. Patrick Glöckner is the right person to talk to if you want to find out more about Dickson Abiama. The soccer coach worked with the 27-year-old offensive player between January and June 2025. Around a year ago, Abiama was loaned from 1. FC Kaiserslautern to TSV 1860 Munich, and in February 2026 he moved to Rot-Weiss Essen. Under Glöckner, Abiama played 15 games (two goals and four assists) and quickly became a fan favorite at Grünwalder Straße.
“Rot-Weiss Essen is getting an absolute model professional and role model. Dickson fits in incredibly well in a group and in the soccer locker room. He is so well-mannered – it’s crazy. He always looks you in the eye when he talks to you, thanks you warmly and is just a positive guy. It’s a pleasure to be around someone like that. He has the potential to become a fan favorite,“ Glöckner, who had a really good coach-player relationship with Abiama, enthuses to Forecasting.
From a sporting perspective, the 49-year-old soccer coach is also full of praise for the new RWE signing: ”He can play on both wings, but also as a false 9. Dickson personally prefers to play on the left. As a coach, I liked to use him behind the strikers because that’s where he’s strongest for me as a free spirit. He does things that the opponent, but also his own coach, doesn’t expect. He also creates space for the team and produces good situations. His running performance is enormous. That applies both to his speed and his ability to cover a lot of ground. He can cover a lot of ground. For an offensive player, he is very stable defensively. I do believe that he fits very well into Uwe Koschinat’s style of soccer. Dickson is predestined for a pressing game and for closing down a two- or three-man central defense.
When Abiama left 1860 for Kaiserslautern in the summer of 2025, Glöckner also had to leave a few weeks later. At the end of August, the Bonn native was relieved of his duties after three wins, two draws, and three losses. At that point, 1860 was only three points behind a promotion spot; currently, they are seven points behind third place in the relegation zone.
Glöckner left the Lions with an impressive points average of 1.71 per game. At this point in time, he does not wish to comment on his departure from 1860.
In the end, the teams with the best availability will succeed. That means having few injured players. This is especially true now in the winter months on heavy ground. The example of Hoffenheim’s U23 team shows how quickly things can go in a different direction when you lose two or three players. Patrick Glöckner on the promotion race
Glöckner lives much more in the here and now and observes what is happening. “For example, I am very happy for Christoph Dabrowski that he got the job in Aue. ‘Dabro’ is a good guy. Personally, I am in constant contact with club officials. That doesn’t mean we always talk about jobs, though. But I could also get started again. You always have to be ready for a job,“ says Glöckner, describing his current situation. He adds: ”I’m open to many things. But in order to ultimately take on a new challenge, I have to have a very good feeling about the club officials. Of course, this should be mutual in the end. That’s the only way to work together sensibly.”
The former coach of FC Viktoria Cologne, Chemnitzer FC, Waldhof Mannheim, Hansa Rostock, and 1860 Munich is naturally following the events in the 3rd division with great interest.
Glöckner says of the promotion race: “I do believe that the teams between first and tenth place can still be promoted. Each team has a different approach and strategy. In the end, the teams with the best availability will make it. That means having few injured players, especially now in the winter months on deep ground. The example of Hoffenheim’s U23 team shows how quickly things can go in a different direction when you lose two or three players. That’s why I’m talking about availability here. Whoever gets promoted now would be really lucky. It is and will be a close race until the end.”
