Former BVB assistant coach takes over FC Bayern Munich U19 team

FC Bayern has presented a new coach for its U19 team. He has already left his mark at Borussia Dortmund.

At Borussia Dortmund, René Maric was part of Marco Rose’s coaching team. Now, the 31-year-old is taking on the role of head coach for the first time – at FC Bayern. As the German record champions announced on Monday evening, Maric will be on the sidelines of the Munich club’s U19 team in the future. He takes over from Michael Hartmann, who has been released.

Maric will be working as head coach at FCB for the first time. The Austrian made the leap into the professional game under Marco Rose. Maric worked with the current coach of RB Leipzig at RB Salzburg, and moved to Borussia Mönchengladbach with him, before moving on to Dortmund in the summer of 2021. At BVB, his responsibilities included opponent analysis and post-match reviews.

But when Borussia and Rose parted ways after just one season, Maric’s time in Dortmund also came to an end. The Pro License holder moved to England, where he spent six months at Leeds United as assistant to Jesse Marsch. After that, Maric was rumored to be linked to head coaching roles at clubs including Rapid Vienna.

However, he decided to stay in the background. Maric joined Bayern Munich as a development coach in November. A few weeks later, he made the switch to the front line – albeit “only” with the Bayern Munich U19 team. Maric already knows the team “very well from his good and intensive work on campus,” said campus director Halil Altintop.

Maric will celebrate his premiere as early as Wednesday, when Bayern face FC Basel in the Youth League playoffs. “I was surprised by this development today,” said Maric on Monday evening, “but I’m really looking forward to working with the team and this exciting task. I will do everything I can, together with my coaching team, to support the boys and achieve the club’s goals.”
