Former Schalke player Kyriakos Papadopoulos is looking for a new club. His contract in Greece has been terminated.
Kyriakos Papadopoulos is without a club for the third time in the last four years. Just under four months after signing for APO Levadiakos, his contract was terminated by mutual consent on Monday. The center back made eight appearances for the Greek first division side, missing the last two games through injury.
“We thank him for his contribution to our team and wish him all the best for his career,” the Greek club said on social media.
The 32-year-old played for PAS Lamia for almost a year and a half before joining APO Levadiakos. Papadopoulos had previously played in Croatia, Saudi Arabia, and Romania. However, he is best known for his time in Germany. In 2010, the uncompromising defender moved from Olympiacos Piraeus to FC Schalke 04 at the age of just 18. He then enjoyed the best and most successful period of his career with the Royal Blues.
The 1.85-meter-tall player quickly became a fan favorite with his robust style of play. In his very first season, he won the DFB Cup with Schalke in a one-sided final against MSV Duisburg (5-0). Papadopoulos played the entire match.
Papadopoulos reached the Champions League semi-finals with Schalke
The center back also played an important role in the club’s sensational Champions League run to the semi-finals in 2011. Papadopoulos played every minute of both quarter-final matches against defending champions Inter Milan (5-2, 2-1) and the semi-final matches against Manchester United (0-2, 1-4).
The 32-year-old played a total of 97 competitive games for Schalke between 2010 and 2014 (scoring seven goals). He was sidelined for almost a year due to knee surgery, otherwise the Greek would have easily broken the 100-game mark. Nevertheless, he has never played more games for any other club in his career. After his time at Schalke, Papadopoulos also played for Bayer Leverkusen, RB Leipzig, and Hamburger SV. He is now without a club, and it will be exciting to see where his next journey takes him.
