Former FC Schalke 04 striker is in training

SG Wattenscheid 09 have remembered an almost forgotten striker in their search for reinforcements.

SG Wattenscheid 09, bottom of the Oberliga Westfalen table, have been busy making moves during the current winter transfer period. And this is not over yet.

Following the arrivals of Umut Yildiz (TuS Bövinghausen), Maurice Haar (KFC Uerdingen), Nico Thier (TuS Bövinghausen) and Niklas Lübcke (TuS Bövinghausen) and the departures of Nico Lucas (ETB SW Essen), Lars Holm, Ahmed Kulalic, Martins Williams, Karoj Sindi, Blerton Muharremi, and Yutaro Ichimura (all unknown), Marco Cirillo as well as Gianluca Cirillo (both Solingen-Wald 03), SGW wants to strengthen its so far harmless – 14 goals in 15 matches – offense once again.

And this is where David Loheider suddenly comes into play. The 32-year-old attacker, who played for FC Schalke 04 between 2004 and 2012 and was regarded as a huge forward talent, is training with SG Wattenscheid 09 and wants to recommend himself to coach Engin Yavuzaslan for a contract.

Most recently, the family man, whose daughter is a big fan of Rot-Weiss Essen and Loheider from Schalke, was often injured and played just 20 minutes in the 2023 season. “In sporting terms, that was a year to forget. Things can only get better in 2024. I’ve recently got myself fit again and I’m fired up for soccer. Let’s see what the year brings for me,” Loheider tells Forecasting.

David Loheider could return to Wattenscheid after 20 years

Loheider has already experienced a lot in his career. As a youth player, he played for Spielvereinigung Erkenschwick (1997 to 2001), SF Stuckenbusch (2001- 2003) and, as described, FC Schalke 04 (2004 – 2012). This was followed by a stint at SG Wattenscheid 09 in the 2003/2004 season. He made five appearances for the German U17 national team, scoring one goal, eight times for the DFB U16s and scoring five goals.

At senior level, he played for the Schalke U23 team, Rot-Weiß Oberhausen, Goslarer SC, SV Wilhelmshaven and SV Rödinghausen in the regional league. He scored 20 times in 86 appearances. He later played in the Westfalenliga and Oberliga for clubs such as Hammer Spielvereinigung, TuS Bövinghausen, Lüner SV and TuS Haltern. It is quite possible that SG Wattenscheid 09 will soon join him – it would be a return to the Lohrheide after around 20 years
