Former RWE and BVB – Essen boy moves to Bulgaria’s serial champions

Hendrik Bonmann used to play for Rot-Weiss Essen and Borussia Dortmund, but from the coming season the goalkeeper will be under contract in Bulgaria.

Hendrik Bonmann has played for Austrian Bundesliga club Wolfsberger AC since 2022. During these two years, the 30-year-old was a regular keeper and played 60 competitive matches.

His contract with the former European Cup participants expires on June 30, 2024, but he has already found a new club: Bonmann will join Bulgarian serial champions Ludogorez Rasgrad.

Rasgrad became champions in 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022, 2023 and 2024. After the 13th title in a row, the club can now look forward to an experienced goalkeeper who has already played for Würzburger Kickers in the 2nd division in Germany.

On Tuesday, Bonmann successfully completed the medical examinations and fitness tests in Sofia, after which he signed his contract. “I am very happy to become a part of Ludogorets,” said the 1.94-meter man during his presentation.

The club’s ambitious goals are fully in line with my mentality and way of working. I’m looking forward to exciting challenges next season and will do my best to help us achieve our big goals.

Bonmann continued: “From the very first meeting with the club’s management, I had the feeling that I belonged here. The club’s ambitious goals are completely in line with my mentality and way of working. I’m looking forward to exciting challenges next season and will do my best to help us achieve our big goals.”

Hendrik Bonmann is a true Essen boy. He was born in Essen in 1994 and also wore the RWE jersey from 2009 to 2013. The now 30-year-old played a total of six Regionalliga West games for the Red & Whites.

After his time at Hafenstrasse, Bonmann played for Borussia Dortmund (2013-17), 1860 Munich (2017-20), Würzburger Kickers (2020-22) and most recently Wolfsberger AC. From next season, the goalkeeper will then lace up his boots in Bulgaria. It will be a new adventure for the former Essen and Dortmund player
