Late blow for BVB’s U23s: Thanks to the first goal of the season by Sascha Voelcke, former RWE defender, Waldhof Mannheim wins away for the first time.
Borussia Dortmund’s U23s had to do without a few of their mainstays on Tuesday (October 22) against SV Waldhof Mannheim. But the reason for this was pleasing: with regular goalkeeper Marcel Lotka, captain Ayman Azhil, Almugera Kabar and Cole Campbell, four Dortmund juniors were in the Champions League squad for the match against Real Madrid.
The guests from Mannheim came to the Rote Erde stadium in Dortmund with a lot of momentum from their last matches. Since Marco Antwerpen was sacked after the fifth matchday, they have picked up ten of the twelve points. New coach Bernhard Trares has won three of his five games since taking office. But Mannheim has not yet won a single away game.
In contrast, Dortmund’s U23s are extremely strong at home. They also have the top scorer in the third division, Julian Hettwer, in their ranks. But in the tight third league, anyone can beat anyone.
The home team started the match well, and in the early stages they were particularly dangerous from corners. Jordi Paulina had the chance to give BVB the lead after one of these – only a brilliant save by Waldhof goalkeeper Jan-Christoph Bartels prevented Mannheim from falling behind. The subsequent corner almost resulted in a goal. Franz Roggow’s header towards the far post could not be pushed over the line by the incoming Eberwein (11th).
After half an hour, the guests also became dangerous. After a free kick, Marcel Seegert could have put Mannheim in the lead – he got the ball in the penalty area, but his shot from close range was deflected onto the crossbar by Lotka’s substitute Silas Ostrzinski. Shortly before the break, it was the young Dortmund players who had the chance to take the lead again. Free in front of Bartels, Hettwer failed to get past him, and he was also unable to control the second ball (42nd). So the break ended goalless – somewhat fortunately from the visitors’ point of view.
After the break, Kobylanski surprised BVB keeper Ostrzinski with a sharp corner that almost went straight into the goal. Ostrzinski thought the corner was out of play – but Shipnoski at the far post got to the ball and tried it from a few meters. With a bit of luck, Ostrzinski cleared it for a corner. In the second half, Borussia Dortmund’s U23s were unable to build on their good first half, but the now better SV Waldhof Mannheim were unable to get in front of the Dortmund goal. Until ex-RWE full-back Sascha Voelcke caused ecstasy among the Mannheim fans who had traveled with them. In the 83rd minute, Voelcke forced Mannheim into the lead. He moved into the penalty area at speed, shot on goal and surprised Ostrzinski, who had to admit defeat. And that was it.
Waldhof Mannheim’s first away win, and Dortmund’s winning streak is broken.
