Former Schalke player crowns wild derby in extra time, Reus delivers, LA last

More than six months after winning the championship, LA Galaxy just can’t seem to get going in the US. Even the latest results don’t hide that fact.

Things are never boring at Los Angeles Galaxy. The latest league game was the derby against Los Angeles FC. In a lively game, the two sides ended up drawing 3-3. LAFC had led 3-1 for a long time. It was not until the 79th minute that Gabriel Pec pulled one back from a pass by Marco Reus, before Galaxy came back again deep into stoppage time. In the 97th minute, former Schalke player Maya Yoshida scored the much-celebrated equalizer to make it 3-3.

However, this still means they remain bottom of the league table. LA Galaxy have collected just 16 points in 24 Western Conference games.

At least things are going well in the Leagues Cup, where LA recently celebrated a 5-2 victory over Club Tijuana. Marco Reus was among the goalscorers, of course. But even six goals and seven assists in 20 games cannot hide the fact that the former Dortmund player would have imagined his first full season in the USA differently. LA Galaxy: Former Schalke player Maya Yoshida is also in the squad alongside Reus. Just over six months ago, the world looked very different. What he had been denied for years in Germany came true after just a few months in the USA. While it was Reus’ first championship after two DFB Cup wins with BVB, Yoshida celebrated his first title at club level.

Reus joined in mid-August 2024 and has played eleven games in the past season (one goal, three assists). Yoshida’s services were and are in high demand in Los Angeles. He played in 39 games in the 2023/24 championship season and the captain is also a regular in the current season.

LA Galaxy is Yoshida’s first foreign club

The situation was similar during his time at Schalke. Yoshida was a regular in the Gelsenkirchen club’s central defense in the 2022/23 season. He played 29 games and was captain at times as deputy. He only missed a few games at the end of the season due to injury problems. For Yoshida, Los Angeles is his first stop outside Europe since leaving his home country in 2010. The former national team captain spent most of his career with Southampton FC in England. He also played for VVV-Venlo, Sampdoria Genoa, and Schalke.
