Ex-Schalke goalkeeper Alexander Nübel is causing a sensation with VfB Stuttgart. In the summer, however, he will have to return to FC Bayern – where Manuel Neuer is waiting.
When Alexander Nübel left FC Schalke 04 in the summer of 2020, he probably imagined his future to be like the present: Nübel, now 27 years old, is the clear number one of a Bundesliga club, repeatedly plays to zero, is on the verge of making it into the Champions League with his team.
The catch is that he left the Royal Blues for FC Bayern Munich almost four years ago, but this season Nübel is keeping goal for VfB Stuttgart – which certainly doesn’t diminish the joy of his strong performances. But because he is only on loan with the Swabians and will have to return to FC Bayern in the summer, the question arises as to his future: will he finally gain a foothold in Munich? Back to VfB Stuttgart again? Or something completely different, but permanent? This definitely seems to be an option for Alexander Nübel.
According to Portuguese media, Sporting Lisbon are said to be very interested in signing Alexander Nübel in the summer. It is said that Rúben Amorim, coach of the league leaders (one point more and one game less than runners-up Benfica Lisbon), is “a great admirer” of the ex-Schalker, who has established himself as one of the most consistent Bundesliga goalkeepers this season at VfB Stuttgart.
Before that, however, he spent two years in France with AS Monaco. Does Nübel’s future now lie abroad again?
Stuttgart are also still hoping for ex-Schalker Nübel
Nübel could become Sporting’s number one: The previous regular goalkeeper Antonio Adán has been injured for some time, and the 36-year-old’s contract in Lisbon ends in the summer. And there are doubts about his current replacement, Franco Israel (23) from Uruguay, being able to be the number one at the 19-time Portuguese champions. If necessary, Sporting can also imagine a loan.
Because Alexander Nübel has proved to be a reliable back-up and fan favorite at VfB Stuttgart this season, the Swabians are looking to loan the goalkeeper out again. “If there is a deal that benefits all three parties, we are always ready to talk,” VfB CEO Alexander Wehrle had already announced.
The third party alongside Alexander Nübel and VfB Stuttgart is FC Bayern. The 27-year-old is still under contract there until 2025. According to a Sky report, Munich’s new sporting director Max Eberl is probably interested in extending Nübel’s contract and loaning the former Schalke player to Stuttgart again. The contract of the then 39-year-old national goalkeeper Manuel Neuer also runs until 2025 at the record champions. Perhaps Alexander Nübel could become Munich’s number one after all, as he probably hoped when he left Schalke in 2020
