After two successful years at Wuppertaler SV, Marco Königs was no longer a regular under Hüzeyfe Dogan last season. Now he has a new club.
Marco Königs has already seen a lot in his career. After taking his first steps at senior level with Fortuna Düsseldorf II, his path led via Preußen Münster, Wehen Wiesbaden, Jahn Regensburg, Fortuna Köln, the Würzburger Kickers and Hansa Rostock briefly back to Preußen before he found a new home at Wuppertaler SV in 2020. In total, Königs can look back on 28 games in the 2nd Bundesliga (one assist), 190 appearances in the 3rd Liga (39 goals, 19 assists) and 84 Regionalliga games (19 goals, nine assists).
In his first two seasons in the Bergisch, the striker was one of the regulars, first making 38 appearances in the competition (twelve goals, two assists), then 41 (nine goals, four assists). In the past season, however, the now 33-year-old was usually at a disadvantage against top scorers Serhat-Semih Güler and Roman Prokoph.
Königs only made 16 appearances in the league, mostly from the bench, and did not score a goal. At least he scored one goal in two Niederrheinpokal appearances. After the last season, he said goodbye to the Red-Blue team.
Königs stays red and blue
It is now clear where Königs will lace up his boots in the coming season. The club colours will remain the same, but he will be moving down two levels in the league pyramid. The centre-forward is transferring free of charge to the Mittelrheinliga team Bonner SC.
“At 33 years of age, Marco fits perfectly into the concept we had in mind for our squad. As a centre-forward with experience in the 2nd and 3rd divisions, he also brings a lot of flexibility and expertise that will help us a lot in the new season,” emphasised sporting director Daniel Zilken on the signing.
The two sides quickly found each other during the talks. “Right from the start, he signalled to us that he was ready to take on the challenge and show that he can contribute to advancing the team with his qualities,” Zilken gave an insight.
Königs himself also emphasised that the talks were “great from the start”. “I am motivated to tackle together with the team here and make something big happen,” announced the newcomer.
“Something big” awaits the BSC on the very first matchday. On Friday, 11 August (7.30 p.m.), the Rheinlöwen will open the season in the Mittelrheinliga with a derby at their home Sportpark Nord. The guests are the reigning champions FC Hennef 05.
