Former Borussia Dortmund striker Lucas Barrios announced the end of his career on Friday evening. He became German champion twice with BVB.
Former Dortmund Bundesliga professional Lucas Barrios has ended his career as a player. “The moment has come, never imagined, to say adiós to professional football,” the 37-year-old wrote on Instagram on Friday evening (local time). “It’s been 20 years of giving my best everywhere I’ve been.”
But he added that it was a “Hasta luego” (See you soon) because he would always be connected to football. The former Paraguay international striker had last played for CA Patronato in Argentina.
With Borussia Dortmund, Barrios had scored 39 goals in 82 Bundesliga games between 2009 and 2012 and had twice become champion. He went on to play for Guangzhou Evergrande, where he won the Chinese championship and the Chinese Cup, Spartak Moscow, Palmeiras São Paulo and Grêmio Porto Alegre. With Palmeiras, Barrios became Brazilian champion and cup winner together with ex-Bundesliga professional Zé Roberto. With Grêmio, he won the Copa Libertadores, the South American equivalent of the Champions League.
