After three years of losses, the second division soccer club is back in the black. The club plans to continue on its current path.
Second division table leaders Fortuna Düsseldorf closed the 2023/24 financial year with earnings before interest and taxes (EBIT) of EUR 1,884,517.25 and a net profit for the year of EUR 567,883.30.
After three years of losses, the club was able to close another financially successful year.
This result is based on a successful season in terms of sports and on courageous decisions regarding the strategic realignment “Fortuna for All”.
The club increased its revenue by around 35% compared to the previous year. This was mainly achieved through sporting success, transfer income, income from the DFB Cup, as well as increasing sponsorship revenues, ticket sales and merchandising revenues as part of the “Fortuna for All” realignment. The growing number of members also contributed to this positive result.
However, expenses also increased by around 24% in line with the revenue increase. In addition to general inflation, this is due, among other things, to the increased stadium rent (for reasons of state aid law), increased security costs due to higher stadium utilization and minimum wage adjustments. In addition, a recovery order for bridging aid from the Corona period has meant that a provision of almost two million euros had to be created.
Strategic focus on sustainable growth
Despite these challenges, Fortuna is consciously investing in the future, including in digital infrastructure, the youth academy and women’s and girls’ football.
“We are pleased that the path we have chosen is bearing fruit and that the hoped-for growth effects have materialized in many areas. We will continue to pursue this path and work hard to ensure that we can grow sustainably. It is good to know that we have a clear plan and a strategy. This allows us to look ahead positively, despite all the challenges,” says CFO Arnd Hovemann.
