Fortuna Düsseldorf are working energetically to terminate Nana Ampomah’s contract. The second-division club wants to get rid of its millionaire flop as soon as possible.
When Fortuna Düsseldorf signed Nana Ampomah three years ago, those responsible around the then sports director Lutz Pfannenstiel thought they had landed a major coup. They paid 3.5 million euros for the services of the winger, who in his 23rd year had had a good year for Waasland-Beveren in the Belgian Jupiler League. In announcing the move, Pfannenstiel spoke of Ampomah leaving a “lasting impression”. It should be true, if rather in a negative sense.
After all, Ampomah goes down in club history as probably the biggest transfer flop. He has since made 17 appearances for Fortuna, scoring once each in the DFB Cup against Villingen and Lautern. That was it. After relegation to the 2nd Bundesliga, he was loaned to Royal Antwerp, where he didn’t make the matchday squad once in his second year.
Now the huge misunderstanding is finally to be ended. According to the Bild newspaper, the Ghanaian’s contract is to be terminated as soon as possible. In the talks with the winger and his advisor, however, no agreement has been reached yet. According to the article, Ampomah does not even want to give up parts of the outstanding salary of 200,000 euros. Nevertheless, Fortuna simply want to get rid of him. Given his history, other clubs are also likely to give a wide berth to signing the now 27-year-old.
Coach Daniel Thioune, who wanted to give him another chance after his return from Antwerp, had last transferred Ampomah to the U23 after he had once again returned late from home leave almost three weeks ago. He only made it into the matchday squad once this season. Accordingly, his immediate departure would not be a loss.
