Fortuna Düsseldorf stormed to the top of the 2nd Bundesliga table and spoiled the debut of Eintracht Braunschweig’s interim coach Marc Pfitzner.
Fortuna won 4-1 (2-0) at the bottom of the table to kick off the eleventh matchday and climbed to first place, at least until Saturday. Braunschweig’s rivals from Lower Saxony, VfL Osnabrück, also suffered a 4-0 (0-1) defeat at Greuther Fürth.
Düsseldorf’s Christos Tzolis (12th) and Vincent Vermeij (14th) quickly made things clear at Hamburger Straße with an early double strike. After Florian Krüger (59th) scored the equalizer, Jamil Siebert (64th) responded appropriately. Ao Tanaka (90.+8) set the final point. With 21 points, the team of coach Daniel Thioune is ahead of the Hamburg duo FC St. Pauli (20) and HSV (20) for the time being, which is in action on Saturday.
Braunschweig, where Pfitzner replaced the suspended Jens Härtel on Monday, remain bottom of the table with just five points after their eighth defeat of the season.
Due to the partly delayed arrival of ultimately 19,333 spectators, the game started with about 15 minutes delay. And Fortuna picked up where they left off in the thrilling 4:3 win against 1. FC Kaiserslautern after trailing 0:3 – after just fifteen minutes, the situation was already clear.
In front of 9978 spectators in Fürth, the game remained open for a little longer, but then became all the more one-sided. Julian Green (45th) gave Fürth a well-deserved lead just before the half-time whistle. Immediately after the break, Armindo Sieb (47th) increased the lead before Dickson Abiama (74th) and Tim Lemperle (76th) pushed the score higher.
