Fourth win in a row – St. Pauli heads into international break as league leaders

FC St. Pauli goes into the international break at the top of the 2nd Bundesliga. The 5:1 against 1. FC Nürnberg is well deserved.

FC St. Pauli did not let itself be stopped in the 2nd Bundesliga by 1. FC Nürnberg. Thanks to a double strike by Johannes Eggestein (49./56.) after the break, the Hamburg team celebrated its fourth win in a row on Saturday evening with a 5:1 (1:1) victory over the Franconians.

In injury time, substitutes Etienne Amenyido and Connor Metcalfe made the victory even clearer. The still unbeaten team of coach Fabian Hürzeler successfully defended its lead in the standings after the ninth matchday with the success.

In the first half, Elias Saad (4th) had given the hosts an early lead in front of 29,546 spectators at the sold-out Millerntorstadion. After a lapse by St. Pauli goalkeeper Nikola Vasilj, Kanji Okunuki (24.) equalized in the meantime. Nuremberg conceded their first defeat in three games and are ninth for the time being.

As usual, FC St. Pauli started stormily – and was quickly rewarded. Saad completed a great combination, among others via captain Jackson Irvine, who returned to the starting eleven after his injury, with his third goal of the season. The Hamburg team continued to dominate the game and forced the Nuremberg side into their half.

Only after 20 minutes did the visitors break free of their grip. Nevertheless, the equalizer came as a surprise – and with the help of St. Pauli’s goalkeeper Vasilj. He played the ball into the feet of ex-St. Pauli player Mats Möller Dähli, who passed to goalscorer Okunuki.

The hosts needed a few minutes to recover from the setback. Just before the break they increased the pressure again. At the end of the first half, they had a possession ratio of 69:31 percent. The balance of power did not change in the second period. Only this time, Hamburg were more consistent. First Eggestein’s brace and later the double strike by Amenyido and Metcalfe ensured a clear result. Nuremberg only made their mark once more when Lukas Schleimer (70.) hit the crossbar.
