From BVB of all teams – This is Asamoah’s dream national coach

Gerald Asamoah has commented on the current situation of the German national team. The 43-time international continues to believe in the DFB selection.

He played 43 games in the national jersey, is a FC Schalke 04 legend and team manager of the royal blue second division club: It is clear that Gerald Asamoah is also looking at the developments at the German Football Association – and has a clear opinion. Who does he think should lead the German team to next year’s home European Championship? Matthias Sammer.

Asamoah believes that DFB sports director Rudi Völler will only help out as coach of the German national football team for one match and hopes for Matthias Sammer as the new coach afterwards. “As an international player, I personally had very good experiences with Rudi Völler as a coach,” said Asamoah, who was runner-up in the 2002 World Cup with team boss Völler: “I think it makes sense for him to take over now on an interim basis for one match. But I don’t think he has any ambitions beyond that.”

After that, Asamoah could “well imagine Sammer as coach. First of all until the European Championship in Germany and then we’ll see. Sammer would certainly be a very, very suitable and recognised personality for the current situation, who can directly set new impulses.” Sammer currently works for Schalke’s arch-rivals Borussia Dortmund. A club where he has legend status.

The 55-year-old has been advising BVB since 2018, discussing Borussia Dortmund’s next steps with managing director Hans-Joachim Watzke, among others, every week. In 2018, managing director Hans-Joachim Watzke justified the effort to find Matthias Sammer in an interview with WAZ, saying: “We need someone like Matthias Sammer, his ability to analyse, his passion, his identification, his clear view from the outside.”

Despite the recent crisis with the dismissal of coach Hansi Flick on Sunday, Asamoah is “not totally pessimistic” about next summer’s European Championship. We still have very good players in the national team and I can well imagine that we will see that again on the pitch by the time the European Championship comes around. “
