The German U17 national team has reached the last 16 of the World Cup. This has consequences for the A-Junior district derby between Borussia Dortmund and Schalke 04.
The German U17 national team has reached the last 16 of the World Cup in Indonesia. Coach Christian Wück’s team won the group with a 3-0 win over Venezuela and will now face the youngsters from the USA on Tuesday (9.30 German time). “The boys have fully embraced the World Cup, even though we had no preparation and had to put up with a few setbacks,” said Wück. “The boys have what it takes to stay in the tournament even longer.”
Mike Tullberg, coach of Borussia Dortmund’s U19s, is likely to continue to follow this path with some interest. And not just because three of his protégés – Paris Brunner, Almugera Kabar and Charles Herrmann – are in the German squad. The DFB team’s performance will also have an impact on competitive matches at home.
As the U17 national team has now qualified for the knockout round, the derby between Borussia Dortmund and FC Schalke 04 in the A-Junior Bundesliga has been postponed, according to the BVB website. The match in Gelsenkirchen was originally scheduled for next Saturday (November 25). However, a new date has not yet been set.
The match between the Black & Yellows and SC Verl has already been rescheduled for December 17 (11 a.m.). But that’s not the end of it.
Games must be played in the Youth League
While such postponements are possible at national level, this does not apply in the Uefa Youth League. Should the U17 national team also advance to the quarterfinals, Tullberg would have to do without the BVB trio in their national team jerseys for the match at AC Milan (November 28, 2:30 p.m.).
Borussia Dortmund’s U19s are in second place in Group F of the Youth League behind Milan with seven points. BVB lost the first leg 2:1.
