German women’s footballers reach European Championship final – 2:1 against France

The German women’s footballers have reached the final of the European Championship in England. The team of national coach Martina Voss-Tecklenburg won the semi-final against France on Wednesday with 2:1 (1:1). Captain and leading scorer Alexandra Popp delivered an outstanding performance.

The footballers were obviously at a loss for words, writing on Twitter:

Both goals for the Germans were scored by captain Alexandra Popp. The first first from close range, then came the equaliser 1:1, Kadidiatou Diani hit the inside post, from the back of goalkeeper Merle Frohms the ball bounced into the net.

But Alexandra Popp added a second goal with a header. Germany’s women will now face hosts England at London’s sold-out Wembley Stadium on Sunday.

Voss-Tecklenburg still had a video message from Jürgen Klopp included in the match briefing – and provided additional motivation. “Now you know that I like a certain kind of football,” Liverpool’s star coach said there. “And accordingly you can imagine that I love your football. “
