Rot-Weiss Essen transferred Dominik Martinovic to SSV Ulm 1846. Not without a clause that shows that they are quite afraid of encountering an angry ex-RWE player.
The international break gives Rot-Weiss Essen two weeks to digest their 2-3 home defeat to Alemannia Aachen. On Friday, September 12 (7 p.m.), RWE will face second division relegated team Jahn Regensburg in the 3rd division.
Veteran Klaus Gjasula may not be available, as he has to sit out this week due to ankle problems. Ironically, it was midfielder Gjasula whom RWE coach Uwe Koschinat left on the bench for 90 minutes against Aachen, only to conclude after the poor performance that the team probably needs him more than he thought. “As coach, I have to say that the team needs Klaus Gjasula so much that he is indispensable even in the most positive phases, even if he doesn’t play as well as he did in Wehen.”
Now he is uncertain for the Regensburg game, and Jaka Cuber Potocnik is also not in training this week. The striker, who is on loan from 1. FC Köln until the end of the 2025/26 season, is with Slovenia’s U21 team, which plays Norway in the European Championship qualifiers on September 9 (6 p.m.). This means he will not return to Essen until Wednesday (September 10), which is not an ideal situation ahead of Friday’s game.
Dominik Martinovic has not been with the team since the end of the transfer window. The striker, who has been unlucky in competitive games and has seen little playing time despite a strong preseason, made a last-minute move to RWE’s rival SSV Ulm, where he was given the number ten jersey.
Martinovic was supposed to face RWE twice, the first time on December 20, when SSV travels to Essen. However, as reported by the WAZ, there will likely be no reunion on the pitch, either at Hafenstraße or in Ulm. A clause that is actually only found in loan deals is supposed to prevent this.
