The defeat at VfL Bochum reverberates at Borussia Mönchengladbach. Coach Daniel Farke is on 180.
Away from home, Borussia Mönchengladbach is not getting it together this season. The 1:2 at VfL Bochum meant the seventh winless away game in the current season.
What was particularly noticeable: VfL looked more gallant, the players gave the shirt off their backs on the pitch. And Borussia looked like a hobby team for long stretches, not really in the mood for 90 minutes in the Ruhrstadion.
And Gladbach coach Daniel Farke, who sat transfixed on the bench, also saw it that way. He didn’t bat an eyelid at his team’s 1:2 goal and even before the highly controversial VAR intervention that disallowed the 2:2, he sat on his bench and outwardly didn’t look happy for a second.
I thought we were despondent, I thought we were lazy, I didn’t think we were fast at all.

For that, he spoke plainly after the encounter and criticised his team harshly: “I didn’t agree at all with our first half – especially the first 25 minutes. We didn’t display all the things we set out to do here. The whole mindset was not courageous. I thought we were despondent, I thought we were lazy in our running, I thought we were not quick in our thinking at all.”
As a result, Bochum quickly led 2-0 – also due to a complete black out before conceding the second goal. Farke: “I thought we were just lazy to run and too lazy to go one-on-one, too lazy to secure depth.”
Although Farke saw a reaction after the break, VfL were more present here too, Gladbach rarely looked compelling and there were not many chances for further goals. Nevertheless, Farke took his eleven somewhat in his stride here: “I think a compliment is then due to the reaction we showed in the 2nd half, despite the defeat.”
Nevertheless, Gladbach is still waiting for its first win away from home. That will now have to wait until 2023, because the only game left for Gladbach this season is the home match against BVB on Friday (20:30), after which they will take a long winter break.
