Borussia Mönchengladbach will host FC Schalke 04 on Saturday evening. Whether BMG captain Lars Stindl will be on the pitch is questionable.
Things have been going like clockwork for Lars Stindl lately. The Borussia Mönchengladbach captain has scored three goals and made one assist in two appearances this year. Most recently, he shone in the 4:1 win over TSG Hoffenheim, scoring once himself and setting up another goal.
But in the upcoming home match against FC Schalke 04, the 34-year-old, who is in good form, is in danger of being absent. Stindl was absent with an injury from training on Wednesday, three days before the clash with the bottom team (Saturday, 6.30pm).
“Lars has back problems, so he couldn’t train. He already had problems last week, on Tuesday at training he showed a reaction. We have to wait and see and decide from day to day,” said coach Daniel Farke after the session, according to the Rheinische Post.
His absence was not ideal “because Wednesday was an important training day”, Farke continued. He already had to do without his captain a week and a half ago against FC Augsburg (0:1). Stindl was missing due to a yellow suspension. “I hope it won’t be too long and that he will be back on Thursday, but I have no guarantee. It will be a tight race.”
So while a call-up from Stindl is still questionable, Farke can otherwise draw from a full complement – all Gladbach professionals are fit. The personnel situation at S04 has also eased up with the return of Rodrigo Zalazar and Alex Kral. As things stand, only the long-term injured Sebastian Polter, Sepp van den Berg and Justin Heekeren are out.
