Third division football club Rot-Weiss Essen invested a lot against Dynamo Dresden and were rewarded with at least a point (1-1). Jakob Golz showed a good performance.
Only a few minutes were missing and Jakob Golz would have been the celebrated match-winner in Rot-Weiss Essen’s home game against Dynamo Dresden. With two strong saves against SGD captain Tim Knipping (76th) and striker Dennis Borkowski (78th), the Essen goalkeeper held on to the narrow 1:0 lead – but then came the 89th minute.
Stefan Kutschke extended a cross to substitute Manuel Schäffler, who scored from close range to make the final score 1:1. “There’s a long ball to the second post, the striker heads across and I try to get out in front. Unfortunately, he gets to the ball before me. That’s the instinct of a striker, that he stands there and knocks the thing in. It’s bitter and feels more like a defeat after the late equaliser. But if someone had said beforehand that we would score against Dresden, everyone would have signed it,” Golz stressed afterwards.
Until Andreas Wiegel was sent off in the 52nd minute, RWE were the better team and could have led by a clear margin. Especially in the strong opening phase, the home side failed to add a second goal.
The 24-year-old Golz saw it similarly after the final whistle: “We started super and, together with the fans, delivered a real firework display. Of course, you can say that you want to add another goal. If that doesn’t happen, then you have to try to keep the 1-0 lead. Unfortunately, we didn’t manage that. “
When you come to Hafenstraße as an opposing team, I think you can expect something. We want to be a home power. We’re well on our way there.

After the 2:2 against Ingolstadt, 2:1 against Aue and 1:0 against Saarbrücken, the 1-1 against Dresden was the fourth unbeaten home game in a row for Essen. Essen’s number one hopes that this record will be extended soon: “We played great in the last home games. When you come to Hafenstraße as an opposing team, I think you can expect something. We want to be a home power. We are well on the way to achieving that goal.
