Hamborn’s hopes die in injury time, four teams must tremble

In the Oberliga Niederrhein, Sportfreunde Hamborn are the first team to be relegated. The second decision will be made in the season finale.

In the promotion race in the Oberliga Niederrhein, the decision was already made on Friday, with KFC Uerdingen celebrating their return to the Regionalliga West after a home win against Spvg Schonnebeck.

All eyes in the league then turned to the relegation battle. And here the situation came to a head on the penultimate matchday. It was not until late on Sunday afternoon that the first of two relegated teams was confirmed: Sportfreunde Hamborn can no longer avoid relegation to the Landesliga.

The Duisburg side beat Ratingen 04/19 3:1, but that was not enough as Mülheimer FC picked up a point at SC St. Tönis (1:1) – by equalizing deep into stoppage time. Bitter news for the Hamborn side, who would otherwise have had to hope for a minor miracle on the final matchday. Mülheimer FC extended their lead over the relegation zone to two points with the late point.

In contrast, 1. FC Kleve can breathe a sigh of relief after a mixed season. With a 2-2 draw against Adler Union Frintrop, FCK extended their cushion on the red zone to four points and can no longer be caught.

Frintrop, on the other hand, face an unpleasant situation in the season finale: The Essen side have already played all 32 games. They are currently two points above the bottom line. They will have to sit idly by next week and hope that TSV Meerbusch (who are not playing this weekend) don’t overtake them. In any case, the Frintropers no longer have their survival in the league in their own hands. Meerbusch, on the other hand, can save themselves with a win – anything less would be too little for TSV.

TVD Velbert have definitive planning security for another year in the Oberliga. The team was unable to make up for its fall in the second half of the season in its home match against ETB Schwarz-Weiß Essen on Sunday. The TVD lost 0:3. But thanks to the results of the competition, the Velbert team can put a tick behind the season.
