HSV goalkeeper Daniel Heuer Fernandes delivers an own goal in the Hamburg city derby at FC St. Pauli for a scene for the year in review. In the end, however, it is enough for an important point.
Despite arguably the most curious own goal in the history of the Hamburg city derby by goalkeeper Daniel Heuer Fernandes, Hamburger SV avoided defeat in the explosive game at FC St. Pauli.
Thanks to the 2:2 (0:2) in the top game of the 2nd Bundesliga, coach Tim Walter’s team managed to salvage a point against the neighborhood league leaders in the 110th edition of the city championship, avoiding a setback in the battle for promotion. Nevertheless, HSV must fear for its second place after the 15th matchday. The still unbeaten Kiezclub (31 points) is still three points ahead of its rival.
The scene of the game was provided by HSV keeper Heuer Fernandes in front of 29,153 spectators in the sold-out Millerntor Stadium. The visitors made a quick clearance via Stephan Ambrosius and Guilherme Ramos in the 27th minute. After a pass from Ramos to Heuer Fernandes, the ball rebounded just outside the goal.
The keeper tried to clear the ball out of the box but instead kicked it into his own goal to make it 0-2. It was the first own goal for the 31-year-old in his 180th second division game. St. Pauli captain Jackson Irvine (15th) had given his team the lead after a corner kick. Goal scorer Robert Glatzel (58th) and Immanuel Pherai (60th) made up for their goalkeeper’s misfortune within two minutes and saved a point.
The players of coach Fabian Hürzeler dominated the game from the start, looked more mature and better in terms of play. However, clear offensive actions were rare. HSV initially disappointed and seemed to be continuing their disappointing away performances this season at the Millerntor Stadium, which is only seven kilometers from the Volkspark.
After the break, the pitch conditions became more difficult due to snowfall. The guests coped better with the slippery surface and equalized with a double strike from Glatzel and Pherai. The game became more open. In the end, the draw was a fair result.
