Has new signing Akaegbobi finally broken his duck? – Praise from the coach

Summer signing Jonathan Akaegbobi has struggled in his first season in the Regionalliga West so far. Now he has scored his first goal.

Jonathan Akaegbobi has been playing for VfL Bochum’s second team since the summer. The 19-year-old was captain of VfL Wolfsburg’s U19 team last season and moved to Castroper Straße despite having a contract. His record in Germany’s highest junior league: 21 goals and 13 assists in 49 games. However, the Dresden-trained attacking player has struggled in his first season in men’s football and remained without a competitive goal in the Regionalliga West until the twelfth matchday. After scoring twice in a friendly against FC Twente Enschede’s U21 team during the international break, he now seems to have finally broken his duck. Akaegbobi scored a spectacular goal in the game against Wuppertaler SV to give his side a 1-0 lead. “I’m getting better and better every week and every match day, I can feel it myself. My first goal has been on the cards for the last few weeks,” explained the versatile offensive player.

Bochum II head coach Heiko Butscher had special praise for him after the final whistle: “Jonathan (Akaegbobi, editor’s note) is doing very well at the moment. He was lacking a bit of confidence because he simply hadn’t scored in a competitive game yet. I hope he has now gained enough confidence and will continue like this.“

Akaegbobi himself had definitely missed the feeling of scoring and now wants to stay in the flow: ”As a striker, it’s always an incredible feeling to score, so I just hope it continues like this.”

Despite his goal, it wasn’t enough for a win against Wuppertal in the end. The hosts scored late in stoppage time to make it 2-2. This meant that VfL were unable to leave the relegation zone. Their next chance to do so will be on Saturday, October 25, 2025, when the Blue and Whites travel to 1. FC Bocholt.
