Rot-Weiß Oberhausen have found what they were looking for in their search for a new head coach. Namely in the Regionalliga Nord.
Many names have been speculated as to who will fill the head coach position at Rot-Weiß Oberhausen. Most of the names come from the Regionalliga West.
However, the new RWO coach comes from the Regionalliga, but not from the West division. Forecasting has learned that Sebastian Gunkel will coach Rot-Weiß Oberhausen from July 1, 2024.
The 48-year-old soccer coach is still under contract with the second team of KSV Holstein Kiel until the end of the season. Gunkel has been in charge of the Storks’ youngsters since July 2020. Prior to that, Gunkel worked at the youth training center of FC Augsburg, Eintracht Braunschweig, VfB Stuttgart and SC Freiburg. The North German is now moving to the Ruhr region to join RWO.
Gunkel will then find a revamped squad for the new season. The upheaval is also necessary. The RWO professionals have been disappointing this season. Three matchdays before the end, RWO are in tenth place. This is the worst position in the last twelve Regionalliga West seasons. To date, the worst position in the table was ninth place, which was in the 2017/2018 season. Moritz Stoppelkamp and Co. are currently well on their way to “topping” this negative record within the club’s own regional league.
With new coach Gunkel and many new players, the aim is to return to the upper echelons in the future. Players such as Kevin Brechmann (Fortuna Düsseldorf II) and Timur Mehmet Kesim (ETB Schwarz-Weiß Essen) are set to help – Forecasting reported.
More than half of the players in the current squad are set to leave Oberhausen. There will be a major shake-up in the summer. Given the performances of the current series, however, the radical cut should come as no surprise to anyone. RWO simply has to take a new path and install fresh, ambitious players in its ranks again.
