Higher market value than best German third division club – former RWO goalkeeper finds new club

He had been looking for a club since July 1, 2024. Now this experienced German second and third division player is heading to Cyprus.

Philipp Kühn was under contract with VfL Osnabrück for six years. The 32-year-old goalkeeper experienced two relegations with the Lower Saxony club. After the most recent descent from the 2nd Bundesliga to the 3rd League, Kühn ended his time with VfL.

After his expired contract in Osnabrück, family man Kühn was unsuccessful in his search for a club. He was on the verge of signing for SV Werder Bremen – Forecasting reported – but in the end, the Bundesliga club chose a different keeper as their number three.

Most recently, Kühn kept fit at his home club Rot Weiss Ahlen. Now, on November 21, 2024, the unemployed time for the goalkeeper has come to an end. He signed in Cyprus with Apollon Limassol until June 30, 2025. The contact came about because first-choice goalkeeper Peter Leeuwenburgh was injured.

Limassol are currently in sixth place after ten match days and are eleven points behind league leaders Pafos FC. Interestingly, with a squad market value of €12.43 million, this is higher than the best squad value in the German 3rd division. Here, the U23 team of Borussia Dortmund is ranked first with a squad market value of €11.68 million. Kühn’s former club Osnabrück is valued at €7.88 million.

I’m also finding the conditions here great and I’m just raring to go again. The first impression is really good: it’s a cool international team and the quality of life in Limassol is also very high compared to Germany.

Kühn, who played 93 games in the third division and 81 in the second, had this to say about his move to Cyprus: “I’m very happy to be at Apollon. I’m passionate about this challenge and looking forward to my first experience abroad in my career. The club is a big club in Cyprus. They have crazy fans – just my kind of crowd. I’ve also got great conditions here and I’m just fired up to finally get going again. The first impression is really good: it’s an international, cool team and the quality of life in Limassol is also very high compared to Germany.”

In 2013, Kühn moved from SV Sandhausen to Rot-Weiß Oberhausen on loan. “That was a good time,” recalls Kühn, who kept the RWO goal 60 times. He adds: “Dirk Langerbein and Patrick Bauder were the last companions from that time. Now they’re gone too. Oberhausen was a good and formative time. I still follow the action, though. For 11 years, I’ve been reading the same headlines about how RWO doesn’t have any money. But you can only leave the league with money. Red-White Essen, Alemannia Aachen and Preußen Münster have already proved that. MSV Duisburg is currently showing how it’s done.”
