Preußen Münster beat promoted SG Wattenscheid 09 4:1 (2:1) in the opening game of the Regionalliga West season. The “preliminary decision” was made shortly before the break.
SC Preußen Münster’s goal for the season is clear: In the end, the club wants to occupy first place in the Regionalliga West and be promoted. Consequently, SCP did not let anything go to waste at the start of the season against SG Wattenscheid 09 in front of 6929 spectators at their home stadium and won the match 4:1 (2:1).
Head coach Sascha Hildmann’s team “struggled a bit” at the beginning and improved over the course of the 90 minutes: “We made a few mistakes in the last third. We were too hectic in some actions, wanted to get the ball forward in one second instead of getting the opponent going with two contacts. Then in the second half it was a clear thing,” recognised the coach.
Wattenscheid counterattack for the lead, Münster turn at the right time
Before the hosts’ attacking play took its course, however, the ambitious Münster side were first given a cold shower after twelve minutes: The visitors from the Ruhr region counter-attacked quickly and nimbly after a corner on the far side via Emre Yesilova and newcomer Kim Sané, who scored to give Wattenscheid the lead. Hildmann commented: “We didn’t quite manage to take control. Then we got the counter-attack goal, which must not happen like that. “
A few moments later, Andrew Wooten levelled the shock and equalised (15th). A “small preliminary decision in the direction of Münster” then fell shortly before the break, analysed SGW coach Christian Britscho: “We had a good chance to make it 2-1. We don’t take the contact in the sixteen, but almost in return Preußen takes our contact, so on one side a penalty is whistled and on the other not.” Henok Teklab scored confidently from the spot (45th).
Hildmann with praise for the visitors’ defence
In the second half, Prussia took control of the game and extended their lead through Alexander Hahn (79th) and Darius-Dacian Ghindovean (81st). In the end, Wattenscheid were lucky that only four goals were scored. Hildmann was relieved: “Defensively, Wattenscheid defended very well and compactly. It was difficult to find gaps. I’m glad that we won the first game, which wasn’t easy for us either, in the end.”
Promotion coach Britscho would have liked to see more resistance from his team towards the end of the game: “There is no doubt that Preußen deserved to win the game. We couldn’t break free in the second half and made it a bit too easy for the deserved winner with the goals to 3:1 and 4:1.”
Next week, SG Wattenscheid will have to face Wuppertaler SV at Lorheide (31 July). At the same time, SC Preußen Münster plays host to SC Wiedenbrück.
