There will probably be two Friday matches on May 5: Schalke will play in Mainz and Leverkusen wants to move the derby against Cologne to that day.
There could be a surprise in the Bundesliga – and FC Schalke 04 is part of it. On Friday evening, May 5, there will probably be two games at 20:30: FSV Mainz will receive Schalke 04 – and Bayer Leverkusen will probably play 1. FC Köln at the same time.
Recently, there have been increasing rumors that the Schalke game in Mainz could possibly be postponed. Schalke has now contradicted this. “So far, no one has approached us with the desire to relocate the Bundesliga match in Mainz. We firmly expect the match to take place as planned. Such a short-term change to the match schedule would be incomprehensible and contrary to the interests of the Schalkers traveling with us, just in view of the already planned arrival of our fans, who will accompany us in large numbers as in every away game,” the club said.
FSV Mainz would not want to move the game to Sunday anyway, because on this day the Gutenberg Marathon takes place in the city. A highly frequented event that would probably get completely out of hand due to thousands of soccer fans.
But why could there be two games at all? Mainz against Schalke is the “official” Friday match. But Bayer Leverkusen, because of its own success in the European Cup, is pushing for a postponement of the Bundesliga match against Cologne, which is scheduled to take place two days later on Sunday. This would give Leverkusen more preparation time for the Europa League semifinal first leg at AS Roma the following Thursday (May 11).
