Hoeneß promises Bayern the championship – and slaps BVB down

Record champion Bayern Munich is sitting at the top of the Bundesliga table. This tempts club patron Uli Hoeneß to make a bold announcement.

26 points after ten match days – that’s what they’re thinking about at Säbener Straße. Bayern have only left four points in the Bundesliga.

The lead over their closest pursuer, RB Leipzig, is already five points. After finishing third in the previous season, Munich is now on course for the championship. The Bavarian chest is broad again. Or as they say in Munich: Mia san mia.

A healthy dose of Mia san mia was also evident in Uli Hoeneß’s statements yesterday evening. “What I can promise is the German championship,” said the Bavarian patron at an event held by the newspaper Finanz und Wirtschaft (quoted via Bild). ”We are in a great position at the moment. We are top of the table. And our only real competitors, Bayer Leverkusen and RB Leipzig, are far behind us.”

Conspicuous and intentional: Hoeneß did not count Borussia Dortmund, once their biggest rival and with whom Bayern were still in a thrilling race for the championship at the end of the 2022/23 season, among the “real competitors”. In fact, the black and yellows, currently in seventh place in the Bundesliga, have already instilled more respect, with a ten-point gap. Even at BVB itself, no one is talking about the championship at the moment.

Success is the work of Kompany

Hoeneß has never made a secret of the fact that he considers former coach Thomas Tuchel to be the main culprit for the unsuccessful previous season. All the greater the praise for his successor Vincent Kompany: “There is a difference like day and night compared to before. He is communicative and takes care of his players,” says the Bayern boss.

A phone call to Pep Guardiola, who had the Belgian under his wing for many years as a player, convinced the decision-makers about Kompany. Hoeneß: “He simply told us we could take him blindly, he’ll manage.” The fact that the 38-year-old manager had previously been relegated from the Premier League with Burnley did not tarnish the overall positive impression. Now he is supposed to restore Bayern’s dominance. The honorary president is optimistic: “Actually, there shouldn’t be much standing in the way of successful years at Bayern.”
