Mario Götze will wear the number 11 for his World Cup comeback for the national football team.
The German Football Association made the announcement one day after national coach Hansi Flick nominated the 26 players for the tournament in Qatar. Götze wore the number 19 on his jersey when he scored the winning goal in the 2014 final against Argentina in extra time – this time it is Bayern attacker Leroy Sané. The 11 was still reserved for World Cup record scorer Miroslav Klose, for whom Götze had been substituted at the time.
The number 9, vacated by the absence of Timo Werner, is taken by DFB newcomer Niclas Füllkrug as a classic centre forward. The number 10 is, as usual, Serge Gnabry from FC Bayern. Regulars like Manuel Neuer (1), Antonio Rüdiger (2), Joshua Kimmich (6) or Thomas Müller (13) have their usual jersey numbers. Youngsters Karim Adeyemi (24), Armel Bella Kotchap (25) and Youssoufa Moukoko (26) were given the highest three shirt numbers in the squad.
