On the field, Borussia Dortmund and FC Schalke 04 are worlds apart. But on Saturday morning, their troublemaking fans clashed.
A violent brawl broke out at Cologne Central Station on Saturday morning, November 1, around 6:15 a.m. Hundreds of fans from Borussia Dortmund and Schalke 04 were involved.
According to “Bild,” the troublemaking BVB fans were returning by ICE from their away game at FC Augsburg (1-0), while the Schalke fans were on their way to their away game at Karlsruher SC. “A previously unknown Schalke fan then pulled the emergency brake on platform 8 at the station, after which 340 Schalke fans immediately stormed out of the train,” the paper quotes a spokeswoman for the federal police as saying.
The police also mention 340 Dortmund fans on the other side. In the area of the tunnel between platforms four and five, both groups then clashed and engaged in a violent brawl. Federal police officers separated the two groups using batons and pepper spray. One police officer was injured.
The pepper spray also had the desired effect on various participants in the mass brawl, which, according to “Bild,” was apparently premeditated. Together with officers from the Cologne Police Headquarters, both groups were finally separated and escorted back to their train cars. The trains then continued on their way, and no arrests were made.
However, investigations are underway for breach of the peace, aggravated assault, resisting arrest, and unlawful activation of the emergency brake.
Borussia Dortmund won their away game in Augsburg 1-0 thanks to a goal by Serhou Guirassy. Schalke suffered a bitter last-minute defeat at the hands of Karlsruher SC.
For a long time, it looked as though Karlsruher SC and FC Schalke 04 would settle for a 1-1 draw following goals by Kenan Karaman (66′) and Marcel Beifus (76′). But in the 93rd minute, Fabian Schleusener scored to secure a 2-1 victory for the home team. Schalke remains at the top of the table, one point ahead of SV Elversberg.
