On the second day of the intermediate round of the Essen Indoor City Championship, the favorites left their mark on the tournament. Nevertheless, there were also a few surprises.
The second day of the intermediate round of this year’s Essen Indoor City Championship has been played. Eight more teams made it through to the final round. Groups five and six were played in the morning. Groups seven and eight followed in the afternoon.
Group 5: Defending champions with outstanding odds
SpVg Schonnebeck already won the cup last year and this year the Oberliga club once again underlined its ambitions to win the title. Coach Dirk Tönnies’ team played a perfect intermediate round and finished first in the group with nine points and a goal difference of 18:0.
District league side TGD Essen-West also progressed to the next round in second place with six points. Türkiyemspor Essen dropped out of the tournament in third place with three points, as did FC Blau-Gelb Überruhr with zero points, who fielded a B team in order to reduce the risk of injury for the upcoming second half of the season.
Group 6: Group winners dismantle group runners-up
VfB Frohnhausen from the Landesliga Group 2 secured victory in the group with three wins. Head coach Issam Said’s team were particularly impressive in the final group match, beating RuWa Dellwig 7:1. Despite the heavy defeat at the end, Dellwig still finished second in the group and reached the final round next weekend. FSV Kettwig were eliminated from the tournament with three points, as were Preußen Eiberg in fourth place with zero points.
Group 7: District league team mixes it up in the intermediate round
Probably the biggest surprise of the day came from Bader SV 91. The team from Kreisliga A beat ESC Rellinghausen from Landesliga Group 2 2:0 in the first group match. SuS Haarzopf also had to admit defeat to the underdogs in the second match, losing 3:1. SV Burgaltendorf was the only team to beat Bader SV and entered the final round as group winners with nine points. The Kreisliga side nevertheless progressed to the next round, leaving Rellinghausen in third place and Haarzopf in fourth behind them.
Group 8: FC Kray live up to their role as favorites
FC Kray started the intermediate round as the favorites in Group 8 and lived up to their role. The FC won all three games and entered the final round as group winners. However, the race for second place turned out to be quite exciting. In the end, TuS Helene came out on top with six points, partly because SV Leithe had no chance against FC Kray in the final group match. ESC Preußen finished bottom of the group with zero points.
