Steffen Baumgart has to leave Hamburger SV. The 52-year-old was let go the day after the 2-2 draw against Schalke 04.
Hamburger SV put in a memorable performance in parts of their 2-2 draw with Schalke 04. The second division club’s management has now drawn conclusions from this and the unsuccessful games of recent weeks. Coach Steffen Baumgart has to leave, HSV announced on Sunday afternoon.
“Steffen gave his all for HSV until the very end with great passion, energy, and commitment. However, our analysis of the current situation and yesterday’s game has once again made it clear that we believe a new impetus is necessary to find a way out of the performance and results crisis,” said sporting director Stefan Kuntz, explaining the decision.
It remains unclear who will succeed the 52-year-old. Assistant coach Merlin Polzin will take over on an interim basis for the time being. Meanwhile, Baumgart’s departure also means the end of the road in Hamburg for fellow assistant coaches Rene Wagner and Kevin McKenna.
Baumgart joined the traditional club last February. After 27 games, he has an average of 1.59 points per game. He missed out on promotion at the end of last season. After a strong start to the current season, the Hanseatic club has recently been in crisis.
