Wuppertaler SV celebrated its second win in the second game of the season. Again, WSV turned the game in injury time.
Wuppertaler SV celebrated the second win in the second game in the Regionalliga West. Against the second team of Borussia Mönchengladbach, the WSV won 3:2, but for a long time it didn’t look like a victory at all. The Gladbach team was in the lead until deep into stoppage time. The game started well for WSV in front of 2,209 fans with Charlison Benschop’s penalty kick (7th). But after the red card for Gladbach keeper Maximilian Brüll (54.) the game suddenly went the other way. Mika Schroers (67th) and Simon Walde (70th) turned the game around.
WSV captain Kevin Pytlik searched for an explanation for the weak performance in overtime after the game: “You lead 1:0 and the opponent gets the red card and then we were maybe too sure. Then we get the 1:1, which put us a little out of the game and directly the 1:2. Then the positive thing is that we fought until the end. Still, we have work to do.”
After the game, coach Hüzeyfe Dogan also found fault with the way we played when we were outnumbered: “Of course, I have to reproach my team that we didn’t play more clearly and simply after the red card. We didn’t use our width anymore and then allowed too many counterattacks and had holes. That can’t happen to us when we’re outnumbered. We have to make it 2-0 in that phase and the game is over.”
The fact that it was still enough to win the game was due in particular to the will of the Wuppertal team. Once again, the Wuppertal side turned the game around in injury time. Huseyin Bulut (95th) and Damjan Marceta (97th) scored.
“The Gladbach team was definitely stronger and more willing compared to last week. They have a brutal quality. In the end, it was luckier than it was against Aachen. The way we came back at the end, it was a bit lucky, but I’m happy to take the three points,” Dogan summed up the win afterwards.
While the Wuppertaler thus started perfectly with six points from the first two games. Is the third in the table of last season started with two defeats.
Coach Eugen Polanski: “The spectators have seen a good game with a lot of drama at the end. I must say that we lost the game in the end, but we are not the deserved loser and it was very unfortunate. I saw a team that, unlike last week, brutally got to their 100 percent.”
After being dissatisfied last week, Polanski had nothing but words of praise for his team after the WSV defeat: “We knew it was going to be a board because Wuppertal is just very good. The way my team took it, I’m very satisfied. That’s what I told the team, and with the way we played, we’ll get points. And now, at the latest, we have also arrived in the league again, even if we still have zero points.”
Gladbach will then have the chance to get their first three points when they visit Aachen (Friday, August 11, 7:30 p.m.). Wuppertal will face FC Schalke 04’s U23s at the Parkstadion at the same time.
