Great joy at Wuppertaler SV: WSV has been drawn against Rot-Weiss Essen in the Niederrheinpokal quarter-finals. The sporting director is happy with the draw.
Wuppertaler SV against Rot-Weiss Essen: For over a decade, this was a hot duel in the Regionalliga West. After RWE’s promotion to the third division, this comparison will not get a breather.
The traditional clubs will meet in the Niederrheinpokal quarter-finals. This was the result of the draw on Thursday.
“Ultimately, there are no easy lots in the cup. We recently advanced after extra time at Landesliga team Mülheimer FC 97, ASV Mettmann is causing a stir, RWE advanced in a penalty shootout against ETB. That’s all proof of how close the cup is. But of course: I’m looking forward to this highlight match, also for our fans. They deserve it,” Stephan Küsters told RevierSport.
The sports director does not yet know whether this traditional duel between WSV and RWE will still be played in the calendar year 2022. “Of course I hope that we will still play RWE this year. But there is the problem that the 3rd Division stops earlier than the Regionalliga. Essen play 1860 on a Monday, we play Fortuna Köln in the Regionalliga on a Saturday. So between 14 and 20 November the cup match can’t take place. Maybe then in the following week. We’ll see how the association plans the match,” says Küsters.
First of all, the regional league has priority for the Bergisch team. On Saturday (2 p.m., RevierSport live ticker), they will play 1. FC Düren. The promoted team parted company with its promotion coach Giuseppe Brunetto just this week – RS reported.
“We already know this situation. After Straelen and Bocholt, it’s the third time we’ve faced an opponent who is playing their first match against us after a coaching dismissal,” Küsters recalls and adds: “We’ve made a real step in the last few weeks. We were already written off by many. But we gave the right answer. Now we have to keep working hard to get back on top. We want to win the next game against Düren. “
