Injury shock for opponent – test match ends with ambulance call-out

FC Schalke 04 defeated Heracles Almelo 4:1 in a test match. A young player possibly suffered a serious injury at the opponent from the Netherlands.

Karel Geraerts should be largely satisfied with his first impressions of his new team under competitive conditions. The Belgian made his debut on the sidelines three days after being introduced as coach of FC Schalke 04.

He saw the Königsblauen defeat Heracles Almelo, after all, eighth in the Dutch Eredivisie, 4-1 in a test match on Thursday and gather self-confidence for the upcoming tasks in the 2nd Bundesliga.

The guests will judge the trip to Gelsenkirchen quite differently. And not just because of the deserved defeat against a second-division team despite taking the lead. On top of that, Almelo has to digest an injury shock: Youngster Diego van Oorschot sustained such a serious injury seconds before the final whistle that he had to be transported off the field by ambulance.

It was already the final minute of regulation time when the 18-year-old tried to disrupt Schalke’s build-up play, straddled a pass right in front of the Heracles bench and injured his ankle – according to Dutch media.

Van Oorschot remained lying on the ground, substitutes of the S04 opponent turned away in shock after the scene. Schalke’s sports director André Hechelmann had also witnessed the situation at close range and slapped his hands in front of his face. The referee blew the whistle immediately and thus somewhat too early.

How badly it actually hit the young offensive player initially remained unclear. “Get well soon, Diego van Oorschot! We hope you get back on your feet quickly,” Schalke wrote on Twitter.
