SG Wattenscheid 09 has once again shown its mentality and drew 1:1 with 1. FC Gievenbeck. Coach Christopher Pache praised the irrepressible will.
Top teams? SG Wattenscheid 09 can do it. Within five days, two teams from the upper third of the Oberliga table, Westfalia Rhynern (2-1) and 1. FC Gievenbeck (1-1), were held at Berliner Straße in Wattenscheid.
This means that the team of head coach Christopher Pache has found its feet again just in time for the long-awaited city derby against VfL Bochum II next week.
In two consecutive games, the former Bundesliga club has demonstrated a new quality: comebacks. As against Rhynern, the Black & Whites were also trailing against Gievenbeck through no fault of their own. Christoph Rüther scored from the spot (40th).
“I think we got off to an incredibly good start with two top chances. We had a lot of the play, did well with the ball, were aggressive for second balls. The penalty situation against us took us out a bit at first,” analyzed 09 coach Pache.
But once again, “Nullneun” did not let itself be deterred, fought its way back into the game during the second half and equalized through Robert Nnaji (66th minute). The coach spoke of “fighting spirit” and an “incredible mentality” shown by his protégés within the team circle and praised at the subsequent press conference: “During the break, we took stock and shook ourselves up. When we added to our bench, we regained access to the game. After the 1-1, we had the momentum fully on our side and several opportunities to score.”
An open exchange of blows in the last third ended with a ‘deserved point split,’ according to Pache. The only thing that bothered the 36-year-old was the referee’s line. “Our rhythm was broken a bit by the many whistles, which took us out of the game a bit,” he said, annoyed. Pache did not hold back this opinion on the sidelines either and was shown yellow-red shortly before the final whistle for repeated grumbling.
Gievenbeck series continues
On the other side, the coaching team was also satisfied with the point gained in rainy Wattenscheid. “There was a phase after the 1-0 when we could have wrapped things up. It would have been very difficult for Wattenscheid to get back into the game. It was clear to us that they would increase the pressure in the second half and that we would not be able to defend away for 90 minutes,” summed up coach Torsten Maas. With the 1-1, the Münster team has now gone seven championship games without a loss.
Gievenbeck can confirm the trend in the coming week when they travel to ASC 09 Dortmund (November 23, 2:30 p.m.). But before that, a mammoth task still lies ahead with the Westfalenpokal game against third division club SC Verl (November 17, 2:00 p.m.). SG Wattenscheid, on the other hand, is looking forward to the “game of the year” against the second team of VfL Bochum at the Vonovia Ruhrstadion (November 23, 1:00 p.m.).
