Nearly three weeks after parting ways with Timo Schultz, second division football club FC St. Pauli have found a new head coach in their own ranks.
The interim coach and former co-coach Fabian Hürzeler is to lead the Hanseatic team out of the bottom of the table again.
“We have examined various options and are convinced that Fabian is the optimal choice for us in this situation,” said sporting director Andreas Bornemann on Friday. Hürzeler, who is only 29 years old, is to be presented in the Hanseatic city on 29 December.
The new man at the helm approaches his job positively: “It is a privilege to be able to work here. I have a huge appetite for the work.” The position of co-coach is to be filled at the beginning of next year.
Under Schultz, the North Germans had disappointed in sporting terms in the almost completed calendar year 2022 and had mutated from a promotion candidate to a relegation candidate. Currently, the Millerntor club, in 15th place, is only separated from a direct relegation spot by a better goal difference. The Kiezkicker will kick off the second half of the season on 29 January (13.30/Sky) against 1. FC Nürnberg
