The incident occurred before the final of the Arabian Gulf Cup. According to an anonymous source in the Iraqi Interior Ministry, many fans who did not have tickets arrived at the stadium early in the morning. Many of them tried to get into the stadium, which led to crowding.
The final of the football tournament is scheduled for Thursday evening. It will be played by the hosts Iraq against Oman. Iraq is hosting the Arabian Gulf Cup for the first time in 40 years. The tournament has been running for a fortnight in Basra. Through the tournament, Iraq hopes to gain some relief from its ongoing political crisis and long years of onflict and terror.
