Judo Masters in Jerusalem: Epic day for World Champion Grigalashvili

The second day of the World Judo Masters took place in the historic city of Jerusalem. The Pais Arena was filled with frenetic fans looking forward to another exciting day of judo.

The 81kg class featured some of the best judoka in the world. Reigning world champion Tato Grigalashvili had an epic day – fighting his way to the final.

On the other side of the draw was former world champion Saeid Mollaei from Azerbaijan, who defeated another former world champion in his semi-final bout, Matthias Casse.

In the final, the man from Georgia provided another highlight of the year with a clever counter-attack. 2022 was a special year for Grigalashvili, who said he was so happy to see the support of the children in the stadium.

“I can feel their energy. It’s not only in Tbilisi, it’s everywhere. It’s great to be a role model for the younger generation. It’s amazing to see how they love me, it gives me so much motivation and strength, I thank the kids for their support. “

In the 73 kg category, Brazilian Daniel Cargnin was delighted with his first World Masters title.

Pure joy also for Olympic silver medallist Michaela Polleres. The Austrian won against the World Champion of 2019, Marie-Ève Gahié from France, to win the class up to 70.

She went on to praise the atmosphere in the stadium. “In Israel it’s always like this. I think it’s very nice, I feel great and I’m just happy.”

In the 63kg category, three-time Masters winner Miku Takaichi of Japan defeated her opponent Laura Fazliu of Kosovo to claim an incredible fourth Masters title.

The local athlete:s were once again on top form and put on an impressive judo show. The celebrating home crowd clearly enjoyed their heroes and heroines.

Jerusalem can’t wait for the final day of the World Judo Masters on Thursday.
