Junior training centre – SGS delighted with “real exclamation mark”

SGS Essen is delighted that the ground-breaking ceremony for a new functional building has taken place. This will make the women’s Bundesliga team even more professional.

There is great joy at the women’s Bundesliga team SGS Essen. After two years of planning and close coordination with the city of Essen’s sports and pool administration, the go-ahead was given for the construction of the new functional building at the Helmut Rahn district sports facility.

Essen’s Lord Mayor Thomas Kufen actively broke ground in the presence of other officials from the German Football Association and SGS Essen. “The new building will fully support our women’s football Bundesliga club SGS Essen in its important youth and training work and also provide a valuable home for the current and many new players,” explained Kufen.

He added: “In November 2021, we have already inaugurated the new hybrid turf for a modern pitch at this location to further optimise the training of the girls and women. With the construction of the new building, our Bundesliga club, which will be in its 20th year in Germany’s top division from the summer, will experience another major professionalisation.”

Figures on the new building: The building has an area of around 560 square metres. Among other things, it will be equipped with changing and shower facilities for home and visiting teams as well as for the referees. In addition, rooms for training purposes are planned. “The building will fully meet the requirements that come with playing in the top women’s national league,” explained Kufen.

Also important: the issues of climate protection and sustainability were considered. In addition to a green roof, the building will be equipped with a photovoltaic system, and charging stations for e-bikes are also planned.

“With the completion of the last building block, the city of Essen has created a new home for women’s and girls’ football. With the infrastructure that has been created, we will manage to be even more attractive as a club for young female players. It was and is important to us to focus on the targeted training of young female athletes. In the meantime, SGS and Essen have become well known even beyond Germany. Young players and their parents are enthusiastic about our philosophy and concept. With this new home, we are setting a real exclamation mark,” says Helga Sander, 1st Chairwoman of SGS Essen, happily.
