Kaminski on his comeback, suffering and future

FC Schalke 04 beat Hertha BSC with 5:2 last weekend. For Marcin Kaminski it was a perfect Friday night.

Only three times Marcin Kaminski was on the pitch for FC Schalke 04 in the Bundesliga this season.

That was on matchday 1 over 90 minutes against 1. FC Köln (1:3) and on matchday 23 over one minute at VfL Bochum (2:0) and last Friday in the 5:2 win over 90 minutes against Hertha BSC.

Speaking to the Polish Youtube format of “meczyki.pl”, the 31-year-old Pole, who moved from VfB Stuttgart to S04 in the summer of 2021, gave an insight into his emotional world after his comeback and goal success (from a free kick) against Hertha, his time of suffering and his plans for the future.

Marcin Kaminski about…

… the win against Hertha: “The most important thing was that I was finally back on the pitch. After a long break, I was able to play again from the first minute and we got three points. That made me very happy. The fact that I then scored a goal was a nice addition.”

… His being a reserve: “I thought before the season that it would all be positive for me. Then after the first matchday I sat on the bench. After Malick Thiaw was sold to AC Milan, the coach and I thought my chance had come. But then I got injured. The first half of the season was a lost series for me. Then came the second half of the season. I waited a long time for my chance, I thought I would get it sooner. But then I was set back again by injuries. I didn’t even get into a reasonable rhythm anymore. It’s been a difficult season for me so far. I’m all the happier that I can play again. I trained hard and waited for a situation like the one against Hertha, when Maya Yoshida was out. That’s when I was hoping to get back into the starting lineup. “

There are no contract talks at the moment. I think the club is also waiting to see how the whole situation develops and what direction it goes in. But I don’t want to wait. I want to get any information how they plan with me.

Marcin Kaminski

.. His free kick goal: “Yes, I practice the free kicks. But lately I didn’t have the opportunity to convert such a situation. Even before the game, the co-coach told me to take a free kick if it came to that opportunity in the game.”

… FC Schalke 04’s second half of the season: “The change of coach made a lot of difference. Thomas Reis didn’t have as much time at the beginning to instill his style in us. But then in January we made some changes, including personnel changes, which have done us good. One example is Moritz Jenz. Suddenly we were undefeated for eight games and gained new confidence, new security. We believed in ourselves and in staying in the class again.”

… His future: “Currently there are no contract talks. I think the club is also waiting to see how the whole situation develops and in which direction it goes. But I don’t want to wait. I want to receive any information on how they plan to deal with me. Anyway, I feel very good in this place. If I should still play now, then it can go on like this.”

… A possible return to Lech Poznan: “This is a difficult question. Poznan will always remain an important place for me. I also watch Lech’s games when time allows me. I spent many years at Lech and I owe a lot to the club. They are playing a super European Cup season. I don’t want to rule anything out there either. But the current situation is that I want to stay at Schalke. But we’ll see where I play in the new season. In any case, it will be a place where I’m happy. At the moment, I don’t want to get involved in any speculation. “
