Borussia Dortmund has clearly lost the direct duel with FC Bayern. However, BVB sports director Kehl and coach Terzic still believe that the title race with the Bavarians is far from lost.
Borussia Dortmund’s sports director Sebastian Kehl says the title fight with FC Bayern is far from lost despite the clear defeat in the direct duel in Munich. “We are Borussians, we are getting back up – and the thing is not done yet,” said the 43-year-old Kehl after the 2:4 (0:3) on Saturday evening in the top match of the Bundesliga.
“It’s a bitter day, it hurts. But the championship has not been decided today,” the BVB sports director expressed. Kehl argued that it was, after all, the first league defeat for his Borussia this year and the gap to Bayern is only two points after losing the top spot in the table. “Today, many were not where they need to be to win here in Munich,” he criticised the performance of several BVB professionals: “But we still have five home games and three away games. There are still some points to be awarded.”
Kehl mourned the missed opportunity at the Allianz Arena. “We had a great opportunity to take a good step forward with a point or three,” he said. Coach Edin Terzic expressed similar sentiments in the press conference: “We are going home with a portion of anger. But then we’ll look at the table and see, it’s two points off the top.”
First, however, Borussia’s sights are set on the DFB Cup with Wednesday’s quarter-final match at defending champions RB Leipzig. “We would like to go to Berlin, we still have this title in mind. That’s why we have to recover quickly,” said Kehl.
