Kevin Holzweiler had been without a new employer since July 1, 2023. After leaving Rot-Weiss Essen, he has now found a club.
Just one day after signing Kevin Rodrigues Pires, Fortuna Cologne presented the next former Rot-Weiss Essen player as their new signing.
After already playing in three test matches as part of their winter preparations, they have now made a firm commitment: SC Fortuna Cologne have signed Kevin Holzweiler, who was previously without a club.
Forecasting had already reported in December that the offensive player would be introduced to Fortuna’s training.
“Kevin has already impressed in training over the past few weeks and in the test matches against Siegen, Dortmund and Schalke. We don’t currently have a player like him in our squad. With his speed dribbling and through-balls, he offers expanded possibilities in tight spaces. It’s great that he chose us,” says Matthias Mink, sporting director at the club from the Südstadion in Cologne.
The 29-year-old Holzweiler has a wealth of experience as a footballer. The right winger played a total of 176 games in the regional league for Rot-Weiss Essen, Viktoria Cologne and the second team of Bundesliga club Borussia Mönchengladbach, as well as 69 games in the 3rd division for RWE and Viktoria. With these three clubs, the former junior international won the Regionalliga West four times and the respective state cup three times. He will now also be aiming for the championship title with Fortuna Cologne.
Fortuna, which has played a game less, is seven points behind second-placed Alemannia Aachen and first-placed 1. FC Bocholt. With experienced reinforcements such as Rodrigues Pires and Holzweiler, Fortuna aims to make up the deficit. These signings are definitely a clear statement in the fight for the title and the associated promotion to the 3rd division.
