Last-minute cancellation – Match between HSV and Leverkusen called off

Remaining snow and melting ice on the roof of the Volksparkstadion have prevented the Bundesliga match between Hamburger SV and Bayer Leverkusen from going ahead.

The Bundesliga soccer match between Hamburger SV and Bayer Leverkusen scheduled for Tuesday evening has been canceled. The reason for this is weather-related structural risks in the area of the roof of the Volksparkstadion, the German Soccer League (DFL) explained in a statement less than three hours before the scheduled kickoff. A decision on a new date will be made as soon as possible.

Sky was the first to report on the last-minute cancellation. According to the broadcaster’s information, it would not be possible to ensure the safety of stadium visitors. The match was scheduled to kick off at 8:30 p.m.

The day before, the club was still optimistic after days of work. “The current situation and our great hope is that we will be able to play,” said an HSV spokesperson. “The fact is that for several days now, literally day and night, various colleagues and external service providers have been trying to clear the stadium of ice and snow, which has been very successful,” the spokesperson added at a press conference the day before the match.

Already the third game cancellation in the north

People were busy preparing the stands for the game at the stadium. Workers had already removed snow and ice from the roof a few days earlier. The problems remained: on Tuesday afternoon, the club had informed fans that there were no parking spaces available at the stadium due to the thaw and snow melt.

Due to heavy snowfall and weather-related restrictions, the match between St. Pauli and RB Leipzig and the match between Werder Bremen and TSG 1899 Hoffenheim had already been canceled in the north over the weekend.
