A good Sunday for FC Schalke 04: Because Hamburger SV equalized late at 1. FC Magdeburg, Königsblau remains twelfth. Meanwhile, the league leaders lost.
FC Schalke 04’s rivals were in action on Sunday afternoon. Good news for Königsblau: their rivals from the bottom of the table are treading water after their own 2-0 win against 1. FC Nürnberg.
In Saxony-Anhalt, 1. FC Magdeburg welcomed Hamburger SV. There was plenty of excitement in the first half. After 23 minutes, Guilherme Ramos fouled Magdeburg attacker Luca Schuler. There was a penalty and a red card. Mohammed El Hankouri stepped up and put FCM 1 in front (26′).
Magdeburg then kept the pressure on, but Baris Atik missed the 2:0 (41′). El Hankouri then scored from the spot in the seventh minute of stoppage time. Matheo Raab had previously cleared the onrushing Leon Bell-Bell.
After the break, HSV did not come up with much at first before Sebastian Schonlau brought the Rothosen back into the game with a powerful shot from a few meters out. HSV pressed from then on and equalized late on through Jonas Meffert (90.+4).
Coach Christian Titz’s team thus remain in thirteenth place, while Schalke are in twelfth. Hamburg are now three points behind Fortuna Düsseldorf and third place
Meanwhile, Eintracht Braunschweig and Hannover 96 faced off in the Lower Saxony derby. In the end, the score was just 0:0, meaning Braunschweig failed to seriously catch up with Schalke. With 31 points, the Lions moved up to 15th place and sent Hansa Rostock to the relegation zone.
FC St. Pauli squander two leads against Elversberg
Meanwhile, everything seemed to be going according to plan at the Millerntor. FC St. Pauli hosted SV Elversberg and took the lead after 39 minutes through Johannes Eggestein. Eric Smith had swung a corner to the first post, where Eggestein came storming in and tucked the ball home.
However, Elversberg came out after the break and struck back through Maurice Neubauer. In the 52nd minute, he finished off a remarkable combination to equalize.
St. Pauli hit back again through Marcel Hartel (69′), but Elversberg were not to be denied. Just one minute later, Joseph Boyamba took advantage of the open St. Pauli defense to make it 2:2 (70′).
And it got even better: In the 81st minute, it was Paul Wanner who actually scored to give the Saarland side a surprising 3:2 lead. Shortly afterwards, Elversberg countered again and Hugo Vandermersch slotted home to make it 4:2. Jackson Irvine brought the Kiezkickers back into contention (90.+3), but SV Elversberg held on for a 4:3 victory.
Holstein Kiel in particular were delighted. The Storks are now top of the 2nd division table, St. Pauli second. SV Elversberg are four points ahead of Schalke in tenth place
